Nokia Series

Die Nokia Series ist eine Betriebssystem-Plattform (User Interface), welches auf das jeweilge Betriebssystem aufgesetzt ist. Jedes Modell besitzt eine der Plattformen. Die Series ist nach Modell ausgelegt und je nach Telefon und Ausstattung an bestimmte Zielgruppen angepasst. Meistens richtet sie sich nach folgenden Kriterien:

  • Funktionsumfang des Geräts
  • Unterstützung der Display-Auflösung

Viele Hersteller setzen bei Ihren Mobiltelefonen auf ein und dieselbe Plattform, ausgenommen Symbian-Geräte. Nokia allerdings besticht durch seine ganze Reihe an unterschiedlichen Plattformen, für verschiedene Modelle mit verschiedenen Merkmalen. Heutzutage sind alle Nokia-Geräte einer der verschiedenen Series zugeordnet und besitzen ein speziell für diese Geräte angepasste Betribessystem-Plattform.

Während Series 20 und Series 30 inzwischen ausgestorben sind, nimmt die Series 40 und S60 annähernd die Oberhand im Bereich der Mobiltelefone. Dies sind die beiden gängisten Plattformen, die stets erweitert und mit weiteren Merkmalen in neuen Geräten Platz finden.
S60 bildet hier die Spitze. Zukünftig werden fast alle Smartphones diese Plattform besitzen, da S60 vor allem wegenen seines Potenzial der Erweiterungen in allen Punkten besticht, dicht gefolgt von der breit gefächerten Series 40.

Inzwischen gibt es Unterteilungen (Editions) der Series, die mit der entsprechenden Version versehen sind. Anhand dieser kann man die wesentlichen Merkmale und Funktionen des Geräts erkennen. Für Erweiterungen innerhalb einer Edition werden sogenannte Feature Packs integriert, welche weitere Funktionen beinhalten.

Die Series 45, auch bekannt unter der 3G Series 40, ist keine offizielle Benutzeroberfläche von Nokia. Sie gehört einer gewohnten Series 40 an und hat sich damals zu Zeiten der ersten UMTS-fähigen Telefone (Nokia 6650, 7600) eingebürgert, weil die Charakteristiken einzigartig für diese Telefone waren.

Mittlerweile gibt es eine Vielzahl verschiedener Geräte mit diesen Eigenschaften.

Series 45 / 3G Series 40

Maemo ist eine Open-Source Entwickler-Plattform für Nokia Internet Tablets und andere Linux-basierte Endgeräte. Die von Nokia initiierte Plattform besteht aus freier Software. Maemo passt die Komponenten an mobile Geräte an und ist z.B. eine Alternative zum Symbian OS.

Folgende Betriebssystem werde für die Internet Tablets genutzt:

  • Internet Tablet OS 2006 Edition
  • Internet Tablet OS 2007 Edition
  • Internet Tablet OS 2008 Edition

Die Plattform basiert zu großen Teilen auf dem freien Desktop GNOME, welches ebenfalls von Nokia gefördert wird.
